This is the mansion in the district of Jurmala on which I based the home of Juhla and her mother. When Juhla first took Carl to visit, he thought they must be a well-to-do family. This misconception was short-lived, however, when she explained that her mother merely kept house for the rich Russian owners, who allowed them to occupy the smaller annex on the left as retainers.
The building is typical of the many fine summer residences surviving along Latvia's Baltic coast. |
